St John's Catholic Primary School

To Live in Love

Religious Education

Religious Education is at the heart of everything we do at St. John's Catholic Primary School.

To ensure we are providing the very best teaching for our children, we are in the process of moving from our current ‘Come and See’ programme to a new Religious Education curriculum called ‘To Know You More Clearly’. This exciting new curriculum began rolling out in all classes from September 2023 and will continue to be introduced gradually over the next three years, with full implementation across the school by September 2026.

You can find out more about the new Religious Education Directory below.

‘To know you more clearly’

The Religious Education Directory (RED), To Know You More Clearly, introduced by the Catholic Education Service (2023) has replaced the long-standing Come and See programme across Catholic schools, ensuring that Religious Education remains the central focus of education and reflects the Church’s vision for a renewed, rigorous and engaging curriculum.

All year groups from Nursery to Year 6 following the 6 branches throughout the school year:

  1. Creation and Covenant
  2. Prophecy and Promise
  3. Galilee to Jerusalem
  4. Desert to Garden
  5. To the End of the Earth
  6. Dialogue and Encounter

In each of the branches above the children will:

Hear – Listen to the scripture from the Bible.

Believe – Explore what Christians believe from the scripture that they have heard.

Celebrate – Children will consider how we act as Christians to celebrate what we hear and believe.

Live – Linked to Catholic Social Teaching, children explore how we live out the scripture in our everyday lives.

In order to assess the children’s learning in R.E, the RED provides ‘The Ways of Knowing’, a set of skills that children will develop: Understand, Discern and Respond. The Ways of Knowing and the Knowledge Lenses help provide the expected outcomes for each branch that teachers use to assess what children have learnt and acknowledge areas for development.

Come and See

'and spend the rest of the day with Him.'

Come and See is the Catholic project for Primary Religious Education.

At the heart of the programme is the mystery of God's self revelation of love through Jesus Christ. Come and See gives pupils the opportunity to explore the mystery of faith through scripture and tradition.
